1. How do I know What Books I Need?

You need your course schedule with full department abbreviation/course number/section numbers in order to find out what books you need.
For Example: ACCT-221-01 is the course number for Principles of Accounting with Prof. Law. (Note: The four digit class number is not useful when looking up book information.)

The easiest way to find out your required books is to come to the store with your schedule and look in our Textbook department, or go online to www.bloomustore.com and click on Shop Textbooks.
Note: Pay close attention to the final two digits of each course number. These digits are called the section number. Many times different sections are taught by different professors with different book requirements.

2. How Much do Books Cost?

Plan on spending $400-$600 per semester on textbooks if you are a full time BU student (Some majors like Nursing can require a larger investment in course materials.)

3. Where Do I Buy My Books?

Of course we hope you choose to purchase your books at the University Store, but there are many options when you are ready to purchase. Each student must decide where they are comfortable doing business. The University Store is here to serve you and we think that after researching the options you will choose to shop on campus. If you choose to purchase textbooks somewhere else you should carefully investigate the return policy, shipping charges, handling charges, and especially the length of time it will take for your books to arrive.

4. Tips for Saving Money?

  • Shop early and Buy used books whenever possible. The University Store sells used textbooks at significantly reduced price, usually about 30% off the new book price. Shopping early does give you a better chance of finding used textbooks.
  • Don’t open any shrink-wrapped books or write in any books until you are sure you want to keep them.
  • You cannot return opened packages, or new books that you have written in.
  • Save all receipts. Absolutely no textbook returns are accepted at the University Store without the original receipt. It’s worth saving that little slip of paper!
  • Make any decisions about returning a book within the first week of class. The University Store has a firm return period of the first 8 days of a semester. This means if you show up on the 9th day with the receipt and a perfect book you will not get a refund.
  • Sell your books back to the University Store at the end of each semester. The University Store will pay you cash for any books that we need for the following semester. As long as a professor has ordered that book we will pay approximately 50% of the new price until we have enough copies to stock our shelves for the next semester.
  • Talk to your professors about the importance of keeping book prices down.

5. What is an ISBN?

6. Textbook Condition Preference

When you are placing an online order we need to know if you prefer a new or used book. Here are the options you have to choose from and an explanation of how we handle your order once we are filling it:
  • New Only – If new isn't available, the item will canceled off your order. If none of the items can be filled, the order will be canceled.
  • New Preferred –If new isn't available the item will be substituted with a used book and you be charged the used price.
  • Used Only – If used isn't available, the item will be canceled off your order. If none of the items can be filled, the order will be canceled.
  • Used Preferred –If used isn't available, the item will be substituted with a new book and you will be charged the new price.

Selecting Text in Used or New Condition

The store makes every effort to fulfill textbook orders as requested but cannot guarantee it which may lead to a substitution or removal. If the request is New or Used Preferred and preference is not available, then a substitution will occur; if New or Used Only is requested and not available, the title will be removed from the order.

7. Should I Buy Used Books?

Used textbooks are available for most courses and will save you about 30 percent off of the price of the new textbooks. If you shop early you can avoid the crowds and find a good selection of money-saving used books. Generally, we recommend purchasing used textbooks for introductory or general courses, and new textbooks for courses in your major or whenever you will want to keep the book for future reference.

8. Just How "Used" is Used?

We strive to have high quality used books. Each book is inspected before being placed on the shelf. Our used books should not be missing any pages but may have highlighting and notes written in them from previous owners.

1. When is My Credit Card Charged?

Notification that your order has been received doesn't indicate that your credit card has been charged. It will be charged when the order is processed and you will receive a second email saying the order is complete.

Your card will only be charged for the items we can fill on your order. If we fill your order with a used book when you originally said “New Preferred” you can be sure you will only be charged for the used price, even though your order may have been “preapproved” for the new price. In other words, the preapproved amount on your card may be higher than the final charge, especially for textbook orders.
